Dozens of participants were on hand at Ingersoll Centennial Park on Saturday for the U.S. Midwest Kubb Championship sponsored by the Swedish Historical Society of Rockford. Kubb is described as a lawn game where the object is to knock over wooden blocks by throwing batons at them. Kubb has been compared to horseshoes, bocce, or chess played in the grass or snow. Whatever comparison is made, it is a throwing game of skill, cunning and strategy. According Historical Society, Kubb games feature 23 wooden game pieces. The teams can consist of between 1 and 6 persons, with one team on either side of the field. Distinct methods of throwing are mandated, rules are enforced, and the object is to knock over the King in the middle of the field. News Bulletin photos.
